Уважаемый Александр Владимирович,

Мы обращаемся к Вам, чтобы выразить нашу самую высокую оценку деятельности общества "Мемориал" и целиком поддержать письмо, которое наши французские коллеги написали Вам в связи с ситуацией, сложившейся в последнее время вокруг "Мемориала" и чреватой закрытием этого важного центра исторических исследований в России.

Вместе с нашими французскими коллегами мы призываем Вас употребить всю Вашу власть и влияние и решить проблему с легальным статусом "Мемориала" таким образом, чтобы это заслуженное сообщество ученых смогло продолжить свои усилия по сохранению российской исторической памяти, развитию исторических исследований и достижению лучшего понимания трагической истории ХХ века.

Чем лучше мы будем понимать прошлое и чем более будем открыты в наших дискуссиях о нем, тем больше у нас шансов избежать повторения тех же ошибок, которые могут привести к тем же трагическим последствиям.

For the attention of S.I. Kislyak Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the U.S.A.

Dear Minister Konovalov, We are writing to express our highest appreciation of the activities of the Memorial Society and our full support to the letter that our French colleagues have written to you regarding the situation that has recently emerged around Memorial and threatens this very important center of historical research in Russia with closure.

Together with French colleagues, we urge you to use all your power and influence to find a solution to the problem of Memorial's legal status so that this distinguished learned society can continue its efforts aiming at preserving Russian historical memory, fostering historical research, and contributing to a better understanding of the twentieth-century tragic history.

The better we understand the past and the more open we are in our discussions of it, the more chances we have to prevent making the same mistakes that could again lead to the same tragedies.
